This Was Not Stuffed With the Heart of an Orphan

Oh my god. That thing is so cute my brain just melted into a puddle of baby bunnies.

This is Hoo-Ratio. He got that name because he's an owl and he likes math. And also cause I'm a giant nerd.

You may recall from this post that I've been itching to try my hand at amigurumi, which is Japanese for "crochet that turns vital organs into fuzzy baby animals." No, I did not just make that up. Also, Hoo-Ratio has the heart of a stray orphan sewn into his cute little belly. So he's cute, but also probably evil. I didn't make that up either. Also, today I might be full of nonsense.

He was surprisingly easy to make. I started off using this pattern, but really I only paid attention for the first 2 stitches and then my ADD kicked in and I just hooked and hooked and hooked while watching Indiana Jones bitch about snakes until I decided I was done.



Then I stuffed him full of something soft (can't remember what. oh wait yes, orphan heart) and sewed the top shut, making a few extra, tighter stitches where I wanted his ears. Then I cut out circles of felt and sewed them on, then used french knots to make his pupils, then sewed his beak. Oh and I gave him some little pink felt wings, too. Because he wanted to fly and is comfortable with his masculinity.

He was really easy to make. All in all he took maybe an hour. And I didn't know what I was doing; I imagine some of you could whip him up much quicker.

Since I made him last week when I was staying at the cabin on vacation, I decided to leave him behind for whatever small adult wanted to take him. I was a little sad leaving him, but he'll hopefully brighten someone's day unexpectedly; if only for a few minutes. I wrote my email on the card, so hopefully I'll hear from his new family!

I swear we really did hear bigfoot. There's some weird shit in those mountains.

Also I don't usually use the term "lady garden." Eww.

  1. Aw....Hoo-Ratio is ADORABLE! What a cool thing to do to leaving a treat for the next visitor.

    Way back in the day, I used to leave notes inside library books all the time, just to say hello or share a cool quote.

    ...and yes, those mountains do have wild and crazy noises. I grew up in the Appalachians around the Tri Cities in TN. :)

    3. I personally don't know the area too well (I'm from CA), but I'm always awed by how pretty it is out there, with all the trees and green grass. I'm not used to seeing green grass in summer; CA is brown most of the year. That's why it's called the "Golden State," because everything turns brown by the end of Spring. And also because there was gold. ;)

      Although I think it's fair to say I liked cows first. Did you know (if you did know this then you need an exorcism) that when I was a kid I nursed a newborn calf with a gigantic bottle? He hated me. True story.

  5. You are the most entertaining and genuine blogger I have read in a long time, no...wait - EVAH! I too have crochet pattern ADD - perhaps we are soul sisters. I sure hope the next owners for Hoo-ratio let you know how he's doing - being made of orphan hearts and all he's bound to lead a tragic and therefore quotable life.     1. "Tragic and quotable life..." Awesome! I couldn't have said it better! Is it cruel that I hope he does have that? oh well. As his creator I'm entitled. Although I do hope a chihuahua doesn't get him. I love dogs but they have snarly little teeth, little assholes.

  24. RrrraaaaAAAH! Jamie! I love that little owl! He's so cute I just want to gobble him up. Your blog is great fun to read, I can hear your voice in it. LOL! I, for one, would very much like to hear your Bigfoot story. If you remember, I had an experience once myself and ever since have had more than a passing interest. There is actually a Sasquatch hunters group here in TX that goes on weekend expeditions around the state, I may have to go sometime.

    1. It's actually not much of a story. It was just a lot of really weird, unidentifiable screaming all night one night. I looked up online what kind of weirdness is out there, and apparently there is some kind of Bigfoot-type creature that roams around near where we were staying. Who knows? I'm sure there's stuff out there. You should totally go with the Sasquatch group, and then tell me all about it!

  32. Your owl is so adorable! I have seen this pattern a number of times and always thought it was pretty ugly and not worth the time...but then you made it. I am definitely making an army of these little guys. I will definitely be coping the way that you used felt instead of safety eyes for the face...much more adorable that way. love love love them
